Kaung Htet Kyaw is a Senior Software Engineer with 6 years of experience building distributed systems, scalable platforms, and infrastructure tooling. He has a particular love for low-level systems programming and building things from first principles. He's currently working on kgxlabs, an open-source infrastructure project featuring a Redis-compatible cache in Zig and a custom HTTP/1.1 stack in Go. He's the kind of engineer who isn't satisfied with knowing that something works; he wants to understand exactly how it works under the hood.

Let's Design Cache Layer from Scratch with Zero Dependencies
What does it really take to build a cache from the ground up without relying on external libraries? Drawing from my experience building kgcache, a Redis-compatible cache server written in Zig with zero third-party dependencies, I'll walk through the design decisions behind TCP networking, in-memory storage, key expiration, concurrency, and persistence. We'll explore the trade-offs, challenges, and lessons learned from building infrastructure from first principles, including what happens when the simple solutions stop being simple.
